Comment on the article which explores K-6 Literacy Learning Activities

The article on the K-6 Literacy Learning Activity Types sought to really clarify areas of uncertainty for me with regard to using Web 2.0 technologies to support reading instruction and development.

Reading strategies learnt in the previous semester in the course 'Reading in the Content Area' such as the KWL strategy which supports reading before, during and after reading, as well as activities related to Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension and Fluency, are made easier for the technologically inclined students of this era with Web 2.0 technologies.

With regard to my own practice I can see myself employing concept mapping software as a means of activating prior knowledge; podcasts for sustained silent reading and blogging as a part of my post reading strategy for students to discuss, or provide open mind portraits of what they gained from their readings.

Why I chose to become a Reading Specialist

I am currently a Spanish teacher at Mucurapo West Secondary, and I never knew that I would be embarking on this particular route in my career life. I thought that I would most likely stick with teaching Spanish for most, if not all, of my teaching life.

It was only when I entered Mucurapo West Secondary School that I realized that so many students were missing the fundamentals with regard to English Language and understanding print. I also realized that this bore heavily on their ability to achieve academically and to perform as they should be able to in the wider society.

Literacy is a necessity in life and it is critical that all children possess this skill. With this in mind I sought to address the needs of so many of my students that struggle with reading by applying for entry into this programme to pursue an M.ED in Reading.
