Why I chose to become a Reading Specialist

I am currently a Spanish teacher at Mucurapo West Secondary, and I never knew that I would be embarking on this particular route in my career life. I thought that I would most likely stick with teaching Spanish for most, if not all, of my teaching life.

It was only when I entered Mucurapo West Secondary School that I realized that so many students were missing the fundamentals with regard to English Language and understanding print. I also realized that this bore heavily on their ability to achieve academically and to perform as they should be able to in the wider society.

Literacy is a necessity in life and it is critical that all children possess this skill. With this in mind I sought to address the needs of so many of my students that struggle with reading by applying for entry into this programme to pursue an M.ED in Reading.

  1. I too was disturbed at the reading challenges our secondary students face. I used to use the blame approach and lay it at the feet of the primary school teachers for letting them come up to us this way. Thank God I have revisited my approach. I am now keenly aware of the problems faced by my colleagues in the primary system. I have since applied the training in literacy to my content areas and I am anxious to use the technology that I was hitherto hesitant about.I am glad I got this opportunity to become a Reading Specialist.
