ICT Integration in the Classroom lends itself to Student Motivation

Newsflash: Teachers, our students are the children of this technological era!

It is imperative that we shape and mould our teaching methods to incorporate the wide range of information and computer technology to be able to reach our students. It is critical that we tap into their interests, in motivating them to learn rather than trying to instruct them the way we were instructed.

It is a known fact, that most of our children’s Christmas wish lists consist of a technological gadget of some sort, whether it be an IPhone, Playstation or Nintendo Wii. They love the graphics, the interaction and the convenience.
In the classroom, the use of information and computer technology motivates our students to read and write more. With respect to reading, I’ve noticed that my students feel more comfortable when I send them material online or use my homepage on facebook to publish articles they might be interested in. They are much more comfortable with writing when I use chat facilities or when they produce their assignments on the computer. The computer allows them to edit their work easily and be creative. Students can look at what they have produced and feel proud. A teacher by the name of Katherine Suyeyasu, from ASCEND School in Oakland California states, “If every kid could go through a school experience that would allow them to love learning, then I think we (teachers) have done our jobs.” I endorse this statement 100%, and see information and computer technology as the tool in facilitating our students’ love for learning.
